You Can Sign the Petition to Place Marion Barter Back on the Missing Persons Register
The Australian podcast, The Lady Vanishes, follows Sally Leydon’s search for her mother, Marion Barter, who disappeared in 1997. Sally and the producers have been tracing Marion’s past forensically. They have discovered that Marion changed her name to Florabella Natalia Marion Remakel before disappearing, and that she made numerous withdrawals of $5,000 each from a bank on the Gold Coast.
They have spoken endlessly with New South Wales police, found former coworkers from a boys school where Marion taught, and even traveled to the UK to visit a shop Marion once sent a postcard from. Their last efforts sent them to Luxembourg to track down a man with the surname Ramakel to see if he was the same man who had placed a personal ad in an Australian newspaper seeking a wife decades ago.
While many of the team’s efforts have seemingly led to dead ends, the community of listeners following this story have offered help in whatever way possible. Listeners have presented their theories, created aged photos of what Marion may look like now, escorted the team on their travels and even discovered the personal ad that led them to Luxembourg.
Throughout this process, for reasons that have never been explained, the New South Wales police department has refused to reinstate Marion on the official missing persons list even though she has never been found or contacted. Sally has created a petition (below) that anyone can now sign to help place Marion back on the register.
