"Bring it On" Screenwriter Jessica Bendinger Debuts "Mob Queens" Podcast
Mob Queens released its first two episodes this week and it’s setting the stage for a very interesting season. The Stitcher production features co-hosts Jessica Bendinger & Michael Seligman. Bendinger is a writer and producer who has penned several well-known movies including Bring it On and First Daughter. Seligman is a writer and television producer who has worked extensively with Ru Paul’s Drag Race.
Mob Queens is the serialized story of Anna Genovese, wife of NYC mafia boss Vito Genovese. In the first two episodes, the hosts discuss Anna’s beginnings in Greenwich Village and how she came to be widowed and sub-sequentially remarried to her (fourth?) cousin Vito only a few weeks later. Bendinger makes use of city records to find documents confirming that Anna had filed for divorce from her first husband prior to his murder on the roof of their Sullivan Street apartment, begging the question: did Anna give Vito the go-ahead to get her husband out of the way?
The trailer of the podcast teases what is to come in the rest of the season as Anna transforms into the Queen of the “underground world of NYC’s very first drag clubs.” Anna certainly forms a reputation for herself apart from just being a subservient mafia wife, and eventually ends up testifying against her husband Vito in court.
Benzinger and Seligman are the perfect hosts to tell the surreal and little known story of Anna Genovese. If the first two episodes are any indication, Mob Queens is well positioned to become one of the best podcasts of 2019.
